Well this is a piece of the action. This is a race used Wheel Rim from Checo Perez's 2021 RB16B - a significant piece of the multi-million dollar car.
Whilst it may seem like a mere lump of metal - this is one of the most over-engineered piece on the car. The wheel rim can affect the performance of the brakes, tyres, tyre lifespan and the overall handling of the car - if the wheel is designed badly or made from the wrong materials the team could be leaving seconds of performance on the track.
This wheel rim is made from forged magnesium alloy to make it as light as possible as the 'unsprung' weight (IE any weight not supported by the suspension) makes a dramatic impact on the overall handling, and because the magnesium is best for heat management.
All of the ridges on the wheel rim are there for performance, not so that it looks cool in your living room. These also help to manage the heat. The incredible stopping power of the Carbon-Carbon brakes, that sit mere inches from the tyres, can generate temperatures of up to 1,000°C and this would simply melt the rubber. The team need to be able to lock the wheel into place at a very specific torque setting within a matter of tenths of seconds and this is not possible without these wheel nuts.
